There are a lot of people who are unsure of exactly what PPLNS means. This analogy is one way I like to explain the basic behavior.
Imagine everyone mining on the pool has their own long conveyor belt. Your shares go on one end, travel the length of the belt, and then drop off when they hit the end of the belt. The total time it takes for your share to travel the length of the conveyor belt is 3 hours. 3 hours is the N payout window. It is the N in PPLNS. Note*You can also use a specific amount of shares as your N payout window(like 1,000,000) instead of a time frame like 3 hours. Either way works. For this example I will be using 3 hours as my N window because its a bit easier to explain.
Now Imagine there are three miners. chewy, inuan, and soulreafer. Each miner has their own 3 hour PPLNS conveyor belt. Any share they place on their respective conveyor belts will hit the end and be gone in 3 hours.
Chewy is elite. He mines on d-wave quantum computers and can generate on average 5000 64 difficulty shares in any given 3 hour time-frame.
Soulreafer is also pretty elite. He mines on 290x rigs and gets on average 3000 64 diff shares in any given 3 hour time-frame.
Inuan is super duper elite irl, but for purposes of this example we'll say he's slightly less elite than the other two participants [edited by inaun]. He mines on Canopus Pure 3D Voodoo 2's and can only generate on average 2000 64 diff shares in any given 3 hour time frame.
Now lets say these three miners were the only 3 users on a brand new PPLNS pool and Chewy finds a block after all three miners have spent an unbroken SIX hours of mining.
This is what happens...
As soon as the block is found the pool takes a count of how many shares are in everyone's 3 hour PPLNS window conveyor belts. Even though the block took 6 hours to find we only calculate payments on the N window - 3 hours. Shares outside of this window are gone and don't count for anything. They traveled for three hours down the conveyor belt and fell off the end.
Assuming everyone hits their mean share count exactly....
Chewy has 5000 shares on his PPLNS conveyor belt.
Soulreafer has 3000 on his.
Inaun has 2000 on his.
The total number of everyone's shares in the 3 hour PPLNS window at the time the block was found is 10,000. Chewy will get 50% of the block payout(5000/10000), Soul will get 30%, and Inaun will get 20%.
Continuing....
Right after that first block was found Soulreafer's internet goes down and he does not reconnect.
One hour later, another block is found by chewy. Immediately the pool takes a snapshot of whats on everyones 3 hour PPLNS conveyor belts. Chewy has 5000 since he never stopped mining. Inaun has 2000 still since he never stopped mining. Soulreafer, however, did stop mining. But - he still gets paid. His conveyor belt has only emptied 1 hours worth of his previous shares - he still has 2 hours worth or 2000 shares.
Total shares in this instance for the payout calculation is 9000.
Chewy will get (5000/9000)*blocksize
Inaun will get (2000/9000)*blocksize
and finally.....
Soulreafer will get (2000/9000)*blocksize
Continuing....
2 more hours pass and Chewy finds his third block. Hat trick. In the PPLNS window chewy still has his expected 5000, Inaun has his 2000 still, but soulreafer is now gone. All of his shares have left the window.
Payout this time will be....
(5000/7000) * blocksize for chewy
(2000/7000) * blocksize for inaun
nothing for soulreafer
Hopefully this example is useful and will help you to understand the basic behaviors of a PPLNS payment system. Let me know if you have any questions.
